A compelling website is a must-have for Australian businesses. Most customers head to your company site for information about your products or services, hours, location, and sometimes even your origin story before they buy.
For e-commerce businesses, a website is also your main sales channel. If you run an online store, keeping your website up and running 24/7 and loading quickly is vital to your success. If customers find barriers to buying in the form of slow loads or downtime, you could miss out on sales.
This is why having a top-rate website hosting service is so important. We’ve dug into the data and tested products from the most popular web hosts, along with top contenders you may never have heard of, to identify the best web hosting options for Australian small businesses.
Note: Some international website builders list prices on their Australian sites in US dollars. In these instances, we have included the US price, as well as the Australian amount in brackets afterwards. Currency conversion is correct at the time of publication but subject to change.

Regardless of your tech skills, managed hosting is a great option if you don’t have a large in-house tech department. It takes a lot of the behind-the-scenes management and routine tasks off your hands so you can focus on your business.
New website owners will find the free script, template and module installations to be a huge budget saver, and the 15-minute customer-support response time provides peace of mind when so many other hosts take days to respond to help requests.
We also like that TMDHosting works with both Plesk and cPanel control panels and has Linux and Windows options as well. These features are a definite plus for future scalability.

One thing we really like about DreamHost is that plan features are targeted to the type of hosting instead of a blanket approach, which improves the overall experience. We’re also particularly fond of DreamHost’s custom dashboard. At least for beginners, it’s a less intimidating experience than cPanel for managing your account.
However, lower-tier plans sometimes wind up with many extra add-on costs. For example, outside of new customer specials, site migrations can cost more than $150 AUD, and if your site is hacked, that’s another $320 AUD to get help fixing it.

One of three WordPress.org featured recommended hosts, Hostinger offers a lot for WordPress websites and regular shared hosting. Items such as free email, free automated migrations, the AI website builder and WordPress staging are nice extras.
Storage is generous, and we love that Hostinger offers Minecraft server packages so game players (or their parents) can keep all their hosting needs in one place. Plus, with at least 100 websites included in WordPress and shared hosting packages, there’s plenty of room for small businesses to create as many landing pages as they need.
VPS, cloud and dedicated plans offer plenty of scalability room as businesses grow. If you’re not a massive fan of cPanel, you’ll be glad to see Hostinger’s simplified dashboard for beginners. However, if you have a cPanel plan somewhere else, it might complicate migration slightly.

Mochahost makes it easy to move your website thanks to its migration services. That, plus a strong suite of hosting types, provides good options for most small and medium businesses’ hosting needs. Free first-year domain names, automatic backups, generous storage and lots of hosting-type-specific goodies add up to a great value package.
One of the biggest downsides is there’s no free trial, even on the website builder. While there’s a 30-day guarantee, if you only buy a month you miss out on the annual plan introductory price discounts, and customer service chats warned our Forbes Advisor staff writer there could be delays in getting a money-back refund.

With Weebly on some plans
Getting your content management system (CMS) loaded is one of the biggest hurdles for new website owners—especially with WordPress if they started out on a website builder. In addition to the Weebly website builder, Hostwinds uses Softlaculous to manage one-click installations for hundreds of web apps.
We also like that the basic shared and business shared plans are managed, so SMBs without a tech team have the support they need to keep everything updated and working smoothly in the backend.
One area for improvement is the limited feature comparison checklist between various plan tiers. While the features listed sound great, some features seem to be left off the checklist altogether, so you need to buy to get a true sense of what’s on offer. Combined with a very short cancellation window and prorated refunds, it isn’t the most reassuring situation if you purchase an expensive plan you subsequently want to change.

IONOS skews more toward an enterprise-level hosting provider, but there are still plenty of hosting plans for SMBs. We love that the enterprise-level infrastructure helps underpin some of the smaller hosting plans. That is, while the shared servers aren’t the same as the cloud servers, they’re tightly secured data centres, so you get great physical server security at a bargain price.
While we’re not fans of the price jumps from deep discount introductory offers, we like IONOS’ unadvertised “buy two years, get one free” offer on some shared plans. If you pay for 36 months upfront, you only pay for 24 months for the first term. Renewals are for the full 36-month pricing, though. This offer only appears once you’ve added a plan to your cart, so you’ll have to click around to find it.

You’ve probably heard of Namecheap’s domain registration services, but it also offers competitively priced website hosting. True to its name, prices start cheap, even without introductory offers, while including many items other hosts charge extra for, depending on the hosting type.
Problems can often arise with website migrations, even with automatic transfers. However, Namecheap aims to make migration easy from a cPanel account and guarantees it will be complete within 24 hours with less than 15 minutes of downtime, or you get up to a year of free hosting.
There are a few minor exceptions, and certain virtual private server (VPS) or dedicated server transfers come at a minimal cost, but this is still one of the best migration guarantees available.
We all have personal favourites, but we put that aside to dig into all the data before testing our 17 candidates. Our rubric included 32 factors in four categories to ensure we looked at the most popular features and what you need to ensure the best website functionality. Then we weighted the scores based on their importance to Australian small businesses to determine an overall score.
A few of the factors we considered include:
[simple_tables id=”96518″]
Let’s cut to the chase. If you’ve never had a website before, chances are you’ll only need a shared hosting plan.
Consider these factors when choosing a shared hosting plan:
Essential web hosting features will depend heavily on the type of hosting you need. A VPS, for example, will have very different specs than other types of hosting, such as a bare metal cloud server. But some features do cut across most types of web hosting.
Hosts on our list stand out in these areas, such as Mochahost’s determined support team, TMDHosting’s security features, and DreamHost’s strong uptime guarantee.
Sometimes, cheap really is cheap, and you have to pay a little more for quality. Value is that fine point that balances cost, features and quality. Providers on our list offer reasonable value, but many require paying for one to four years upfront to achieve that balance.
Not every business can afford large upfront payments, so it’s wise to focus on the best-value monthly payment plans.
For overall value, Hostwinds, TMDHosting, and Namecheap offer strong combinations of features and comparatively reasonable plans.
Even if you have a great tech team, there may be times you need customer support. Billing errors occur, issues with the control panel pop up, or there’s a tech issue with the physical servers. Reaching someone quickly at your web host can mean the difference between no downtime and thousands of dollars in lost sales.
For quick customer service response times, look at hosts such as Mochahost and IONOS.
Even if you love your web host’s services, there may come a time when you need to move your website. Companies are sold, terms change, or you might outgrow the host’s offerings. Portability means your website files are yours and can be migrated to a new host.
For the best portability, look for cPanel plans from hosts such as Mochahost, TMDHosting and Namecheap.
Regardless of your business type, you’re likely hoping for growth. As your company and website demands increase, you’ll need more bandwidth. Eventually, you may want to move from shared hosting to something like VPS, where you can increase or decrease computing power as required.
For scalability, consider hosts such as IONOS, DreamHost and Hostwinds.
In the final analysis, which web host you choose will depend on your unique needs. While some features—including storage, speed, customer service, security and scalability—will always be important, those idiosyncratic needs of your business will determine the right web host for you.
For example, these are three common sets of situations SMBs run into:
If you have limited technical experience, choose a managed web host such as TMDHosting.
For a shoestring budget, look for a host with low monthly billing options such as Namecheap.
If you already have a website but want to move to a more fully featured host, consider one such as Mochahost, which offers free migration.

If you have access to the files, most websites created through a CMS such as WordPress or Joomla are portable. Portability means you aren’t locked into a specific web host and can migrate your site later. Websites made with host-specific website builders generally don’t give you access to the design files, so those can’t be packed up and transported elsewhere.
Some web hosting plans include multiple domains and websites, but it varies between web hosts. Shared plans generally have the strictest restrictions, while VPS, cloud and dedicated plans have more flexibility.
How you host multiple landing pages depends on whether you are using a top-level domain (TLD) for each or using subdomains. A stand-alone TLD counts as another stand-alone website, and plans vary on how many they allow. In the case of subdomains (example.yourdomainname.com.au), many plans include unlimited subdomains.
Plesk and cPanel are the most popular control panels or dashboard styles used in web hosting. They act like home pages for users to access crucial web hosting tasks related to domain management, files, and databases. They mainly differ in how they display information: cPanel features all the menu items on one page, whereas Plesk displays a drop-down menu of options. Some people prefer the cPanel layout, while others find it cluttered and swear by the modern-looking menus of Plesk.
