About Youi Motorcycle Insurance

You.Insured, better known as just Youi, is an Australian-registered general insurance provider owned by South Africa’s OUTsurance Group. Established in 2008, Youi offers vehicle, home, watercraft and small business insurance to Australians.

Although one of the younger players in the insurance space, Youi has become a popular choice for Australians thanks to some top-tier offerings and high levels of customer service. For motorcycle users, the insurer offers three levels of cover: third party property only, third party fire and theft, and comprehensive insurance.

Under Youi’s Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance plan, customers can choose market or agreed value (as opposed to several other competitors in the market, who only give their customers one option).

What’s Covered in Youi Motorcycle Insurance?

Youi’s Comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy is its top offering for bike users, covering riders for accidents, theft, damage to other’s property and more. The cover can be personalised to suit the customer’s needs, with the inclusions and optional extras explained further below.

Agreed Vs. Market Value

Policy-holders get a choice of being insured at either at market value or agreed value, which is considered a great perk with motorcycle insurance given that a number of Youi’s competitors only give customers a single choice.

Theft or Damage

Youi’s policy covers theft of the motorcycle, or damage to the motorcycle caused by attempted theft. It also includes accidental or malicious damage to the motorcycle, or damage caused by storm, hail, flood, or fire.

If your motorcycle accidentally causes damage to someone else’s property, the insurance policy will provide cover for up to $20 million in legal liability.

How About After Accident Care?

In the event an accident damages your motorcycle and you are not at fault, Youi will provide a hire car until the motorcycle is repaired or the claim is finalised. In other cases, it will reimburse the cost of personal transport from the accident site.

If an accident occurs more than 100 kilometres from home, and you’re unable to safely ride the motorcycle, Youi will provide emergency accommodation, transport and repairs up to $1,000.

Towing and storage of the motorcycle to the nearest suitable place after an insured event is also covered.

New for Old Wheels?

If your motorcycle is written off in an accident, Youi will replace it with a new bike provided it is less than two years old, and a new motorcycle of a similar make, model and specification is available.

Riding Gear

In case of damage or theft of riding gear belonging either to the rider or pillion, Youi will either replace with a similar make and model, or reimburse up to $1,000 for each claim. This can be upgraded through an optional extra cover to a maximum of $5,000 for each claim.

How About Choice of Repairer?

One of the downsides of this insurance is that customers cannot choose their own repairer. Youi will choose the repairer of your motorcycle from its own network, meaning it may not be your local mechanic or repair shop.

Is Roadside Assistance included?

Yes, roadside assistance is included in comprehensive policies via Youi Roadside Assist. It is available 24/7.

Customer Service and Reviews

Youi offers extensive customer service options, and making a claim is quite straightforward.

There is an online chat available 24/7, claims can be completed online via the Youi website, and customers are also able to phone in during business hours for enquiries and claims. Rather than waiting in a long queue, customers can opt for a call back option.

Claims can be tracked and updated online through the portal on Youi’s website.

Youi’s Comprehensive Motorcycle Insurance has 77 reviews on consumer opinion site Product Review, with customers rating it four stars on average out of five. Customer service and transparency were cited as the insurance provider’s strong points by more than half the customers contributing reviews.

Extras and Exclusions

There are optional extras available with Youi’s comprehensive motorcycle insurance, including the choice of additional cover for riding gear up to $,5000 a claim; adding a compact hire car for a period of up to 14 days if your motorcycle is out of action following an accident; and the option to raise cover on a motorcycle trailer being towed by your insured motorcycle up to $5,000.

In terms of exclusions, the PDS for Youi’s Comprehensive motorcycle insurance states that all claims are void if:

  • The rider is unlicensed or suspended;
  • The rider is under the influence, or refuses drug or alcohol testing;
  • If the rider leaves the scene of an accident without a lawful excuse;
  • If the motorcycle was being used in a reckless manner, or being used for transporting dangerous or hazardous materials;
  • In case of loss or damage arising from flood, storm, hail or bushfire, during the first 72 hours of your policy; and

Other exclusions as listed in the PDS.

Bottom Line

Youi’s Comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy offers the highest level of cover available for motor bikes, covering accidental and intentional damage, as well as loss from fire, theft, storm and a range of other risks.

We like that riders have a choice of insuring at either market or agreed value, and can be eligible for a hire car following a no-fault accident until the motorcycle is repaired or the claim is finalised. Additionally, there is theft and damage cover for both the bike and your riding gear.

Unfortunately, you are unable to choose your own repairer, and other than the no-claims bonus that is already factored into your premium, there are no further discounts at this stage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does comprehensive mean in motorbike insurance?

Comprehensive motorcycle insurance covers you for damage to your motorbike and riding gear, even if you’re at fault for an accident. It is the top-tier of motorcycle insurance with the most inclusions that usually include fire and theft cover, flood and earthquake cover, and so on.

Who has the best motorcycle insurance?

The best motorcycle insurance for you will be based on the premium offered to you, the policy features and value for money. Premiums are generally dependent on individual characteristics such as age and driving history. Overall, in Forbes Advisor’s analysis Shannon’s, Youi and CGU scored highly across a broad range of metrics for comprehensive motorcycle insurance policies, but, as with any insurance policy, it’s important to do your own research and find a policy that suits your needs and driving habits.

Do you need comprehensive motorcycle insurance?

An active CTP insurance is a legal requirement for any driver on Australian roads, and can attract heavy fines if not complied with. Additional motorcycle insurance policies such as third party property damage, third party fire and theft, or comprehensive, while optional, are certainly beneficial because they provide security against large financial bills in case of an accident.
