Australians are well known for their love of travel. Despite cost-of-living pressures and expensive mortgages, we continue to splurge on overseas adventures, whether it be epic European vacations, winter breaks in Bali or luxury cruises.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ most recent figures reveal there were 2.2 million overseas departures in December 2024, an increase of 11.6% from December 2023. The three most popular destination countries were New Zealand (118,130 trips in December), Indonesia (117,160), and Japan (62,570).

Adequate insurance is vital for peace of mind when travelling. It’s also paramount to find an insurance provider that covers the potential mishaps that may occur while overseas—such as missing a connecting flight, falling ill, cancelled events, theft of belongings and luggage gone astray.

Alarmingly, a 2023 study by Smartraveller and the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) found that one in six Australians were travelling overseas without insurance, with younger travellers, those from lower-income households, and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds more likely to travel without insurance. Even those who do have insurance, 19% admitted to not reading the pds properly.

To help Australians navigate the often confusing world of travel insurance, Forbes Advisor Australia has researched the leading players to highlight our favourites. These are our picks of the best policies, and while they may not be yours, they will at least give you a starting point for further research. Hopefully, you will also gain an understanding of what is typically covered in comprehensive travel insurance, as well as standard exclusions to watch out for.

Note: the below list represents a selection of our top category picks, as chosen by Forbes Advisor Australia’s editors and journalists. Not every product or provider in the marketplace has been reviewed, and the list below is not intended to be exhaustive nor replace your own research or independent financial advice. Where the policy really stands out is in its coverage of a broad range of activities—some 93—with travellers able to add on extra coverage for certain higher-risk activities, such as snow sports. Plus, there are more than 2,500 reviews of the policy on Product Review, with an average of 4.2 stars.

Why We Picked It

Bupa travel insurance is underwritten by Allianz, and its comprehensive travel insurance policy is similar to Allianz’s branded offering.

Along with unlimited medical, hospital and $2,000 in dental cover, Bupa offers 24/7 emergency assistance with Australian-based doctors and nurses. It’s more generous than Allianz on the medical front, which has a $20 million limit to medical cover. With Bupa, credit card fraud is covered up to $5,000, and lost luggage is insured at $12,000 (sub-limits apply). The policy is open to all ages.

Pros & Cons
  • 15% discount for Bupa health insurance policy holders
  • All ages are covered.
  • Pre-existing conditions need to be assessed online
  • Some reviews state lengthy waits for claim payments.

Yes, Covid-19 is covered under medical expenses.

Cancellations due to Covid-19 are covered if the cancellation is due to a government-enforced border closure or due to the policy holder having to complete a quarantine. As this is less of an issue these days, this policy feature may not be as important to travellers.

Why We Picked It

Cover-More’s travel insurance not only covers Covid-19 medical expenses overseas, but also provides $2,500 for additional expenses. Lost luggage is also covered up to $15,000, as are dependent children up to 21 provided they are financially dependent and not in full-time employment.

Travellers up to 99 years of age can travel on the Cover-More policy, however, senior travellers must meet certain criteria.

What prevented us from giving Cover-More a higher score was its average reviews: it scored an average of 3.4 stars out of more than 3,000 reviews on ProductReview. (Forbes Advisor pays little attention to reviews when there are fewer than 100, and always takes into account that reviews tend to skew negative).

Pros & Cons

  • $3,000 for missed connecting flights.
  • Senior travellers need to meet acceptance criteria
  • Some poor reviews.
Is Covid-19 cover included?

Why We Picked It

However, there is no cover for credit card fraud, and Qantas insurance receives poor reviews on ProductReview with an average of 1.2 from an admittedly small pool of just 48 reviews.

  • Some poor reviews albeit from a small number
  • Fraudulent credit card activity is not covered.

Our Methodology For Rankings

To create our list of the top travel insurance providers, we analysed more than 30 of the most popular local travel insurance providers. This included evaluating their product ratings online and reviews from previous customers, comparing features and conducting research into their product disclosure statements (PDS).

The following factors were considered:

  • The average product review rating on Australia’s independent consumer review site, Product Review;
  • Age considerations, including whether there was a maximum age cut-off for the policy or whether children up to a certain age can be included within their parents’ policy;
  • Coverage for personal liability, credit card fraud, car hire excess and lost luggage, including any additional fees, conditions and value limits;
  • What is included in medical cover, limits for dental, how many weeks of pregnancy are covered (if any), and whether Covid-19 is included as a medical claim;
  • Whether cancellations, delays or connecting flights were covered, including cancellations due to Covid-19;
  • How many pre-existing medical conditions are included, and any medical conditions that are automatically excluded;
  • How many sports and activities were included in the policy, which activities were excluded, the availability of additional packages to cover certain sports, such as winter sports packs;
  • Emergency assistance and customer service; and
  • Whether there were any online discounts.

What About Price?

You will notice that price wasn’t one of the criteria we used to evaluate policies.

While premiums are an important factor to consider, they vary widely between one traveller and the next depending on where you are going, your age, and your choice of limits.

For example, Travel Insurance Direct offers cancellation cover starting at $2,000, but you can pay extra to increase that to a maximum of ‘unlimited’. Likewise, the premium will increase if you add snow cover or specified item cover for certain valuables.

Like many insurers, Travel Insurance Direct allows you to manage your premiums via your excess: choose a higher excess for a lower premium, or, if you don’t mind paying a little extra now, you can reduce your excess to zero and increase your premium.

The best way to find the right policy is to shortlist a few policies and compare their prices using online quotes.

A Note on Star Rankings

You will note that we have included a star rating next to each product or provider. This rating was determined by the editorial team once all of the data points above were considered, and the pros and cons of each product attribute was reviewed. The star rating is solely the view of Forbes Advisor editorial staff. Commercial partners or advertisers have no bearing on the star rating or their inclusion on this list. Star ratings are only one factor to be considered, and Forbes Advisor encourages you to seek independent advice from an authorised financial adviser in relation to your own financial circumstances and investments before you decide to choose a particular financial product or service.

Covid-19 Travel Rules and Restrictions

It’s much easier to travel now than post-lockdowns when Aussies required vaccine passports, QR codes and health checks to visit, as well as leave, certain destinations.

Nevertheless, with the virus still circulating in the community and some nations possessing higher vaccination rates than others, Covid still has the power to disrupt travel plans. At the time of writing, you do not need to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test to meet Australia’s travel requirements, nor do you need proof of a Covid-19 vaccination to travel to and from Australia.

Masks are also no longer necessary on international flights. However, as per the Australian government’s health and aged care department, Australians are still encouraged to consider wearing a mask to reduce potential risk.

The rules and regulations surrounding Covid-19 travel overseas vary by country and region. Before you travel, be sure to check your destination country’s local public health orders or news of outbreaks. l.

You can check the government’s Smartraveller Destination guide to find the latest updates for your destination and the Australian government’s advice on that region.

The advice levels are: exercise normal safety precautions; exercise a high degree of caution; reconsider your need to travel; and do not travel. Smartraveller notes that advice levels are determined by terrorist threats, levels of violent crime, security risks, civil war or instability and/or health measures.

What if I Have a Pre-Existing Medical Condition?

If you have a medical condition, you will need to ensure your travel insurance covers it under its list of preexisting medical conditions. The same applies if you are recovering from a serious injury.

Most Australian travel insurance providers include a wide range of preexisting medical conditions in their policies, such as cancer, heart problems, respiratory ailments, Crohn’s disease and diabetes. They can also include more common complaints such as asthma, hay fever, and Covid-19.

To find out whether your condition is listed on the policy, you will need to read the travel insurance provider’s product disclosure statement. If your condition is not automatically included, it may still be covered subject to meeting certain conditions or by undertaking an online medical assessment.

However, certain conditions will be excluded outright from coverage, with or without an assessment. Most often, these are preexisting conditions that are the result of alcohol or drug dependency.

Types of Travel Insurance Policies

When comparing travel insurance providers, you’ll see come across a range of policy types. These include:

  • Single cover for an individual traveller.
  • Duo cover for a couple.
  • Family cover for the whole family.
  • Single trip for a one-off destination within a fixed time-frame.
  • Annual multi-trip for those planning to take more than two holidays or business trips a year to multiple destinations.
  • Worldwide, which allows you to travel to destinations across the globe.

There are also often ‘packs’ or ‘additional extras’ that can be added on to these standard policy types, to include specific activities. This includes cruise coverage, for the activities and risks associated with cruise holidays; winter sports packs, to provide cover if you plan to take part in skiing and snowboarding; or backpacker coverage, which covers individuals on longer overseas trips overseas that span numerous countries.

What About Older Australians?

Those over 55 need to ensure they are covered by their travel provider’s insurance policy. Some policies have a maximum age cutoff, while others are more generous. Some, such as Southern Cross Travel Insurance and Cover More, cater to seniors, while other policies may include all ages but levy a higher premium for older travellers.

Older Australians should pay particular attention to the level of cover provided for medical and hospital expenses. While accidents and illnesses can happen at any age, it is a fact of life that seniors are more susceptible.

When taking out an insurance policy–whatever your age–it is essential that you read the insurance provider’s pds and ensure you understand what is excluded. You can read more in our pick of the best travel insurance for seniors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does most travel insurance cover?

When searching for travel insurance, it’s important to find a policy that suits your needs. Ideally a travel insurance policy will cover medical cover, lost luggage and valuables, cancellations, and other emergencies or accidents that may occur while overseas.

Insurance providers will different limits, as well as sub limits, for certain benefits so it’s essential that you read the product disclosure statement before taking out a policy.

Which is the best travel insurance for over 70s?

Travel insurers often have age limits on cover, largely due to the higher risk posed by older travellers. These cut-off ages vary among providers, but as a guide Australia Post, Allianz, Cover-More , Tick, and InsureandGo all offer policies to seniors. You can read more in our pick of the best travel insurance providers for seniors.

Which is the best travel insurance for Covid-19?

Most insurers cover Covid-19-related claims to some degree, although some are more generous than others. As an example, we found Cover-more to be especially generous in its Covid coverage. The comprehensive policy covers Covid-19-related medical expenses as included in its unlimited medical expenses cover, additional expenses up to $2,500, and up to $5,000 for cancellations related to Covid-19. Of course, this is a guide only, and we did not analyse all of the providers on the market, so you may find another Covid policy that is better suited to your needs.

Who is the best company for travel insurance?

It’s important to remember that rather than one travel insurance company being better than the other, there is simply the right match for you: if you’re over 65, then you will want a company that caters to seniors, if you are an adrenaline junky then you will want a company that offers generous activity coverage. In our analysis the following companies scored above-average ratings:

Is it worth buying travel insurance at the moment?

It’s always worth buying travel insurance, even if you don’t intend on taking part in extreme sports or risky activities. Travel insurance may protect you if your flight is delayed or cancelled, you experience a medical emergency overseas or you lose your belongings. With so many providers on the market these days, competition is fierce so you can find reasonably priced travel insurance by comparing a few quotes.

The Department of Foreign Affairs Trade (DFAT) and Insurance Council of Australia’s (ICA) joint Travel Insurance Survey of 2023 found that one in six Australians were not covered by insurance on their most recent trip. The most common reason given for travelling without insurance was “travelling somewhere I knew I’d be safe” (29%), followed by “I wasn’t sure if it was needed” (27%) and “I just didn’t think of it” (25%).

What doesn't travel insurance cover?

Each policy is different so make sure that you read the product disclosure statement to determine whether you’re covered for Covid-related incidents or delays. As a general rule, however, you won’t be covered for mental health emergencies overseas or for incidents that occur when you are under the influence of drugs or heavy intoxication. Nor will you be covered if you are partaking in illegal activities.

Is Allianz good travel insurance?

In our assessment, we found Allianz to have many positive features as a travel insurance provider, not least of which is the wide range of activities covered and the fact that there is no age limit. However, while Allianz previously offered unlimited medical and dental coverage, these are now capped at $20 million.

Is Bupa good for travel insurance?

In our Forbes Advisor Australia assessment, Bupa’s comprehensive travel insurance is a solid choice. It is underwritten by Allianz, so its comprehensive travel insurance policy is similar to Allianz’s branded offering.

Along with unlimited medical, hospital and dental cover, Bupa offers 24/7 emergency assistance with Australian-based doctors and nurses.

How many days before should you buy travel insurance?

You should buy travel insurance as soon as you purchase your tickets, that way you are covered if your trip is cancelled. While there is cover available once you have left Australia, it is much more limiting than had you purchased insurance beforehand.

Who does Qantas use for travel insurance?

Qantas travel insurance is underwritten by AIG Australia Limited.

Why is Australian travel insurance so expensive?

There is no doubt that travel insurance has become more expensive as Australians took to the skies in a post-pandemic booking frenzy. This has resulted in a higher rate of claims, which in turn leads to premium increases. Inflation, too, has played a part, with insurers pointing to the increase in the cost of goods and services as justification for rising premiums.
